Federal Green Challenge Results for 2014

The Federal Green Challenge 2014 results are the criteria upon which the 2015 awards are determined.

On this page:

2014 National Results

2014 Results: -390,000 tons waste from landfills; -80M gallons water; Avoid purchase 15,000 lbs paper; Fleet travel down 12.3M miles; -107M cu. ft. natural gas; 457 tons electronics recycled. Comb. Efforts = Est. Cost Savings of $24M to U.S. Taxpayers

In 2014, over 400 participating federal facilities, representing nearly 1.3 million federal employees, "walked the talk" in various target areas (Waste, Electronics, Purchasing, Water, Energy and/or Transportation) by reducing their environmental footprint. In many cases these actions also resulted in significant cost savings.

EPA calculated national results of 2014 participant actions based on annual incremental change and improvement in the various target areas.

  • Diverted 390,000 tons of waste from landfills
  • Saved 80 million gallons of water
  • Avoided purchasing 15,000 pounds of office paper
  • Reduced fleet distance traveled by 12.3 million miles
  • Saved 107 million cubic feet of natural gas
  • Sent 457 tons of end of life electronics to third party certified recyclers
  • These Combined Efforts Result in an Estimated Cost Savings of More Than $24 million to U.S. Taxpayers

  • 24,643 gallons of fuel oil reduced = $50,666 saved
  • 21 tons of agency electronics recycled
  • 5,173,818 fleet vehicle miles avoided = $2,871,469 saved, which is equivalent to reducing 2126 MTCO2E or removing 448 passengers vehicles from the road for one year.
  • 6,643.47 tons of waste prevented from reaching landfills through composting (692.89 tons) & recycling (5950.58) = $298,358 saved.
  • 19,345 MTCO2 avoided due to recycling/composting, which is like removing 4,073 passenger vehicles from the road or like avoiding the consumption of nearly 45 million barrels of oil for a year.
  • Purchased 86,080 lbs less of paper than the previous year =$68,864 saved 14 Million Sheets of 100% post-consumer Recycled Paper Purchased, conserving over 1,200 forty-foot trees and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 700 MTCE.
