EPA Geospatial Applications
EPA has developed many applications that allow users to explore and interact with geospatial data. This page highlights some of the flagship geospatial web applications but these represent only a fraction of the total. We recommend EPA’s Environmental Dataset Gateway and GeoPlatform Gallery as the best tools to help connect you with an application that best meets your needs.
Air Quality Tools:
Air Quality Data - The daily air quality tracker lets you compare recent AQI values with historical data. This website provides access to outdoor air quality data collected from state, local and tribal monitoring agencies across the United States.
AirNow - AirNow provides current, historical and forecast air quality maps and data for more than 500 cities across the U.S., Canada and Mexico using the Air Quality Index (AQI), a color-coded index designed to communicate whether air quality is healthy or unhealthy. AirNow also reports current and historical data for U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world. As well, the website provides links to current fire conditions including fire locations, smoke plumes, and air quality data from permanent and temporary air quality monitors.

Learn about the Environment in your Neighborhood:
Climate Resilience Evaluation and Awareness Tool (CREAT) scenario-based climate change projections drawn from CREAT. The impacts from a changing climate, including extreme heat and more intense storms, present challenges to water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities and the communities they serve.
Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) is used to determine whether compliance inspections have been conducted by EPA or state/local governments. It also shows whether enforcement actions were taken and penalties were assessed in response to environmental law violations.
EnviroAtlas provides geospatial data, easy-to-use tools, and other resources related to ecosystem services, their stressors, and human health. Users can explore over 400 map layers from their neighborhood up to national level.
Envirofacts Data Warehouse is an application that allows users to access several EPA databases in order to view information about environmental activities that may affect air, water and land anywhere in the United States. Envirofacts allows users to learn about environmental activities in their area or generate maps of environmental information.
EJSCREEN is an environmental justice mapping and screening tool that provides EPA with a nationally consistent dataset and approach for combining environmental and demographic indicators.
My Environment is a web-based tool that features a wide range of information about environmental conditions in an area of your choice. This tool integrates EPA and other resources through a single mash-up display of environmental information, e.g. MyAir, MyWater, MyHealth.
NEPAssist is a tool that facilitates the environmental review process and project planning in relation to environmental considerations. The web-based application draws environmental data dynamically from EPA's Geographic Information System databases and web services and provides immediate screening of environmental assessment indicators for a user-defined area of interest. These features contribute to a streamlined review process that potentially raises important environmental issues at the earliest stages of project development.
Smart Location Mapping data products that were developed by EPA to consistently measure the built environment and transit accessibility of neighborhoods across metropolitan regions and across the United States. Each product summarizes the characteristics of census block groups. Users can download data, browse the data in interactive maps, or access the data through web services.
Waste Management Tools:
Cleanups In My Community is used to map and list areas where pollution is being or has been cleaned up throughout the United States. Find your community and drill down to cleanup specifics about: Sites, facilities and properties under EPA's Superfund, RCRA and/or Brownfields cleanup programs or Federal facilities under EPA's Superfund and/or RCRA cleanup programs. You can also add tribal lands, Brownfields grant areas and water monitoring stations to your map, and drill down to further information about grants and water quality.
Other Tools and Resources:
Facility Registry System (FRS) is a centrally managed database that identifies facilities, sites or places subject to environmental regulations or of environmental interest. FRS creates high-quality, accurate, and authoritative facility identification records through rigorous verification and management procedures that incorporate information from program national systems, state master facility records, data collected from EPA's Central Data Exchange registrations and data management personnel. The FRS provides Internet access to a single integrated source of comprehensive (air, water, and waste) environmental information about facilities, sites or places.
The EPA Metadata Editor (EME) is a custom software tool that aids the practical documentation of geospatial datasets. EME v5.0 assists GIS professionals in creating, editing, and validating metadata that complies with EPA’s Metadata Technical Specification, ISO’s 19115 standard endorsed by the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), and OMB’s Project Open Data (POD) schema. EME v5.0 is EPA’s customization of Esri’s ArcCatalog metadata editor and creates ISO/POD-compliant ArcGIS Metadata.
