The environmental study in the Eastern Heights neighborhood prompted by ongoing work by EPA and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to oversee the cleanup of the Grenada Manufacturing, LLC Facility (Facility, now Grenada Stamping).  Remedial activities at the Facility began in 1990 when waste (from a former landfill located on the Faclity) was excavated for disposal off-site under the direction of MDEQ. Since 1995, EPA has overseen the cleanup of the Facility under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) corrective action program. 

The original 1998 RCRA permit with the Facility was the roadmap for the facility to address historic legacy contamination and waste. The permit was renewed in 2010. 

Under the RCRA permits, the Facility has conducted numerous investigations and response actions over the years, including closure of the former sludge lagoon. Approximately 239 gallons of trichloroethene (TCE) and 2,200 gallons of toluene were removed from ground water. Institutional controls were put in place to prevent potential exposures. Lastly, a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was installed for ground water migration control and treatment. The effectiveness of the PRB is being evaluated by EPA.
