IRIS Literature Screening Verification

As part of the FR notice (69 FR 5971) issued on February 9, 2004, announcing the annual IRIS agenda, EPA stated that it would use findings from the recent IRIS literature screening level review project as the basis for a systematic update of the IRIS database. The purpose of EPA's screening level review was to reach a preliminary determination regarding the need for a full reassessment. That determination was needed based on an evaluation of new health effects literature that could potentially result in significant changes to existing toxicity values or cancer weight-of-evidence designations. The FR notice stated that EPA would begin performing more in-depth reviews of the extant health literature to confirm results from the literature screening. The IRIS summaries have been updated to confirm that existing assessments are current for the substances that were found to be without significant new health effects information that could result in a change to the existing data in IRIS.

Also, the FR notice requested submission of scientific information from the public to confirm the results of the literature screening review. Confirmatory statements were added on September 19, 2004, June 22, 2005, August 15, 2005 and July 5, 2006 to a total of 56 IRIS Summaries. Since then, another 10 confirmations have been completed for 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine, p-bromodiphenyl ether, tribromochloromethane, benzotrichloride, brominated dibenzofurans, 4,4'-methylene bis(N,N'-dimethyl)aniline, bromate, quinoline, diethyl-p-nitrophenylphosphate, and 1,1,1,2-tetrachloroethane. These confirmations will be added to the IRIS Summaries on 09/28/2006. The results of the screening project were added to the IRIS database beginning in 2003 and continue as an ongoing project.

IRIS Literature Screen Verification

The IRIS Program has added statements to certain existing IRIS Summaries confirming that the health effects information upon which the assessment was based is still current. This is to follow up on our February 9, 2004 FR notice (69 FR 5971) announcing the annual IRIS agenda. In that notice, EPA announced that we would use findings from our recent IRIS literature screening project (the results of which were added to IRIS beginning in 2003) as the basis for a systematic update of the IRIS database. We explained that we would begin performing a more in-depth review of the extant health literature to confirm results from the literature screen. For those substances confirmed to be without new health effects information likely to change an existing assessment, we stated that we would update IRIS Summaries to indicate this finding.

Also, in the FR notice we sought submission of scientific information from the public to confirm the results of the literature screen review. Confirmatory statements were added on September 19, 2004, June 22, 2005, and August 15, 2005 to a total of 48 IRIS Summaries. Confirmatory statements for 8 additional substances have been added to IRIS Summaries for methyl methacrylate, nickel refinery dust, 1,2-diphenylhydrazine, tetrachlorocyclopentadiene, trichlorocyclopentadiene, ammonium methacrylate, chlorocyclopentadiene, and t-butylchloride on 07/05/2006. The scientific content of the two systems has been the same during this ramp- up period for the web site. Effective 7 February 1998, this web site is EPA's central location for IRIS. The PC-based IRIS2 system will not be updated after 2 February 1998. We made this change to improve the efficiency and flexibility of the system and speed our delivery of IRIS to you. This web site will be updated continuously as new information is produced for IRIS. Check this "Recent Additions" file frequently for new information.

Several improvements are effective today:

  • IRIS Search. The substance files have been converted from .dat to .html format, which allows use of the EPA server's Verity search engine. This allows you to search the entire IRIS data base for search words present in any of the files. The search engine will present a list of links to files that met your search criteria. Once you have opened an individual file, your browser's search engine (e,g., Netscape's "find in file" command under the "edit" menu) can be used to search within that file. By the end of February 1998, you will also have the ability to go from the top of a substance file directly to the RfD, RfC, and carcinogenicity sections. Other search improvements are underway and will be announced here when available. Searching may be unstable in early February while we fine-tune the new capabilities.
  • Substance file format conversion. Until now, the substance files were ASCII text files (.DAT format). Some users of Microsoft Internet Explorer and America Online had difficulty reading this format with their browser. All of the substance files are now converted to HTML (.htm format) files. We hope this will eliminate the problems some of our users were encountering.
  • Chlordane. The revised chlordane file is now loaded. Note that the companion Toxicological Review for chlordane (PDF) (73 ppF) was loaded December 1997.
  • Methylene diphenyl diisocyanates. The revised MDI file and Toxicological Review (PDF) (54 pp) are now loaded.
  • "Look and feel." We have enhanced the appearance of the IRIS Home Page and sought to improve navigation within the website.
  • One-stroke download. We are working on a quick and easy way for you to download the data base to a hard disk drive for use in your local environment. This is particularly to help users in the field, on the road, and those with intermittent access to the Internet.
  • Methyl methacrylate and Bentazon files and Toxicological Reviews are planned for loading later in February.

IRIS Pilot Project Toxicological Review Documents for Cumene and Tributyltin Oxide (TBTO) Available

The first two toxicological review documents to be developed under the IRIS Pilot Project are available from the new List of Available IRIS Toxicological Reviews page for the substances Cumene and Tributyltin oxide (TBTO). The documents are available as Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF) files. These toxicological reviews are the background documents for the upcoming new IRIS Summary files for Cumene (expected mid-August 1997) and TBTO (expected September 1997). The toxicological review documents will also be linked from the new IRIS Summary files when they go online.

The file for 1,2-Dibromoethane; CASRN 106-93-4 was updated to correct a multiplication factor in Section II.C.3. There are no other substance file updates for July 1997.

IRIS Pilot Project

EPA has a project underway to improve EPA's efficiency in developing information for IRIS, build Agency-wide consensus, and improve documentation for IRIS. The Pilot process is being tested on 11 chemical assessments. New or revised IRIS summaries and support documents called "Toxicological Reviews" are being developed for:

Arsenic
Bentazon
Beryllium
Chlordane
Chromium
Cumene
Methyl methacrylate
Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate [MDI]
Naphthalene
Tributyltin oxide
Vinyl chloride

New or revised assessment summaries for these substances will be made available on IRIS as they are completed during the Summer and Fall, 1997. Concurrently, Toxicological Reviews will be made available electronically on the IRIS web site.

Scientific Assistance on the Hotline

A full time toxicologist was added to the Risk Information Hotline in June 1997 to assist users with chemical-specific questions pertaining to assessments listed in IRIS. The toxicologist will also answer questions pertaining to the IRIS Background Documents that describe the rationales and methods used by EPA to derive the information contained in IRIS. The toxicologist can be contacted by calling the U.S. EPA Risk Information Hotline at telephone 1-513-569-7254, or fax to 1-513-569-7159, or email to Risk Information Hotline (RIH.IRIS@epamail.epa.gov).
