Natural Gas STAR Program

Methane Challenge Program Implementation

After becoming a Methane Challenge Partner (see Join the Methane Challenge Program), Partners complete the following activities:

Prepare an Implementation Plan

The Implementation Plan provides an outline of a Partner's commitment(s) under the Methane Challenge Program and details on their planned participation, such as anticipated rate of progress and key milestones. Companies are asked to develop an Implementation Plan within 6 months of joining the Program.

An Implementation Plan is a living document that changes over time as each Partner's goals and commitments evolve. It can be updated at any time by sending a new version to the Methane Challenge Program Managers.

If you only need to update the Implementation Manager (IM), please notify the Program Managers by email. You do not need to resubmit the Implementation Plan if only changing IMs.

Please submit Implementation Plans and Implementation Manager changes to GasSTAR@epa.gov. Please note that Implementation Plans do not need to be send in hard copy to the program; an electronic copy is sufficient.

Create a Historical Actions Fact Sheet (optional)

Partners have the opportunity to prepare a fact sheet that summarizes historical methane reduction actions taken by the company before joining the Methane Challenge Program. Details are included in the fact sheet template below. Typically partners complete the Historical Actions Fact Sheet within the first few months of joining the Program, however it can be submitted at any time.

Execute the Program

The Implementation Plan provides a roadmap that defines the key elements of a company's participation in the Program. As progress is made, Partners are encouraged to evaluate the adoption of additional commitments.

Each year, Partners submit annual reports detailing progress towards their commitments and methane reductions achieved. Additional details are available on the Methane Challenge Reporting page.
