Superfund Redevelopment Initiative

Appendix for Estimate of National Economic Impacts

Employment, Sales and Income Data

Long-term on-site employment and associated employment income resulting from reuse of Superfund sites is determined by combining information from the databases of Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) with the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data.

Dun & Bradstreet (D&B) is a private company that collects and publishes information, such as number of employees, industry codes, and annual sales, on over 80 million businesses worldwide; 14 million of them are in the United States. The D&B database reports actual number of employees and does not provide information on full time equivalents or whether employees are part time or full time.

When reported in the D&B database sales data is also collected. The database is verified and updated each month. The primary data sources are company financial statements. SRI accesses the D&B database via EPA’s Private Data Portal.

Average weekly wage information for jobs at the businesses for which company profiles were available in the D&B database is acquired through the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages or Current Employment Survey . The BLS provides publically available databases on average weekly wage at the state, county, and city levels by North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) code.

The primary NAICS code from the D&B database for each business is matched to the greatest number of digits possible for the city or county BLS data. The greater the number of digits that match the NAICS code, the more specific the industry classification and the more accurate the data. When city or county data is not available, state data is used, again to the maximum number of NAICS digits available.

Calculating Income from Jobs

The annual income from on-site jobs is calculated by multiplying the number of jobs by the average weekly wage obtained from the BLS for the primary NAICS code at the business and then multiplying by 52 weeks per year as follows:

Total Income [$/year] = Number of Jobs * Average Weekly Wage [$/week] * 52 [weeks/year]
