Davis Timber Company Capped Site Reuse

The Hub City Humane Society animal shelter on siteDavis Timber CompanyThe 30-acre Davis Timber Company Superfund site is located outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. From 1972 until the late 1980s, Davis Timber Company operated a wood-preserving facility at the site. Operators put contaminated wastewater in an on-site storage pond, contaminating soil and sediment. EPA placed the site on the National Priorities List (NPL) in 2000. EPA led cleanup activities at the site between 2011 and 2012. Cleanup included digging up contaminated soil and sediment, placing waste under a 3-acre capped area, controlling surface water flow, and controlling erosion. After a reuse assessment, the site owner donated a 3-acre area for use as a community center and polling location, though this building is located off site. The Hub City Humane Society operates an animal shelter and the Fields of Barktopia Dog Park on site. Other site uses include parking, connections to the Longleaf Trace recreation trail, a community center and restored habitat for pollinators. In 2015, EPA Region 4 recognized the site property owners and the Hub City Humane Society’s leadership with its Excellence in Site Reuse award.

Flowood Site Core Infrastructure Reuse

The 225-acre Flowood Superfund site is located in Flowood, Mississippi. The site is in the wetlands and lowlands area of the Pearl River floodplain. Over the last 60 years, two manufacturing facilities operated on site; owners and operations changed several times. For over 20 years, plant operators discharged polluted wastewater into a nearby canal without a state permit. The state asked EPA to study the area, and the Agency found high levels of lead in the canal water, sludge and soils. In 1984, EPA placed the site on the National Priorities List (NPL). EPA worked with the state and facility owners to remove contaminated soil and monitor the groundwater. The cleanup and improved disposal practices protected area residents and nearby ecological resources. They also enabled industrial facilities to continue to operate, retaining jobs and income in the community. Following cleanup, EPA took the site off the NPL in 1996. Several businesses operate in the former Rival Manufacturing Corporation building on site, including a flea market business and a packaging and supply company. Several other organizations also operate in the former Stone Container Corporation manufacturing building. These organizations include a church, an orthodontics manufacturing company and a coffee-roasting business.

Sonford Products

The 6-acre Sonford Products Superfund site is located in Flowood, Mississippi. From 1972 to 1985, Sonford International and Sonford Products operated two separate chemical manufacturing plants at the site. In 1985, a 2,000-gallon spill occurred at the site and chemical manufacturing operations ended. Plant operations contaminated soil, sediment, surface water and groundwater. EPA added the site to the National Priorities List (NPL) in 2007. EPA dug up and removed contaminated soil, oil and treating solution, and wastewater from the site and disposed of it at an off-site facility. Groundwater monitoring is ongoing. EPA and Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality continue to coordinate on site cleanup efforts. The site includes the Sonford Products parcel, an undeveloped parcel referred to as the Wixson parcel and the Payne Drive neighborhood. A concrete septic tank manufacturing facility operates on the Sonford Products parcel. The facility uses and stores septic tanks and heavy machinery on the site. The Payne Drive neighborhood includes 22 permanent and mobile homes. Dense woods cover the Wixson parcel.

As of December 2019, EPA had data on one on-site business. This business employed 4 people and generated an estimated $750,000 in annual sales revenue. For additional information click here.
