UIC Permitting and Registration Information

EPA Region 7 currently administers the UIC Program in Iowa and on tribal holdings within Region 7.  Per 40 CFR Section 144.26, all owners or operators of an injection well in these areas are required to notify the UIC Program Director of the existence of the well and to provide inventory information. Most injection wells in Iowa and on tribal holdings within Region 7 fall under the Class V category, and are allowed to operate as "rule authorized" without the need of a permit, as long as the necessary inventory information has been submitted. The following is a list of Class V injection wells that only need to submit inventory information to EPA Region 7: cesspools, drainage wells, dry wells, non-commercial heat pump return flow wells, and septic systems (with the capacity to serve 20 or more persons a day).

The EPA Region 7 Shallow Injection Well Registration Form may be used to provide EPA Region 7 with the required inventory information, and may be submitted to r7_uic_program@epa.gov. If you are uncertain if your well has been previously registered, or are currently operating or plan to install a Class V well not mentioned above, please contact us by email or phone using the contact information provided below.

Information on Region 7 authorization of subsurface remediation projects may be found online.

For information on requirements in Iowa pertaining to Class I, II, III, VI or Class V injection wells not mentioned above, please contact the EPA Region 7 UIC Program by email at r7_uic_program@epa.gov or by phone using the contact information provided below.

Questions regarding the UIC Program or its requirements in Iowa may also be submitted to r7_uic_program@epa.gov or via phone using the contact information provided below.

In addition to contacting EPA Region 7 regarding injection well activities, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Water Quality Bureau must be contacted for review of injection activites in the state of Iowa, and may require a state-issued permit or other form of state approval. IDNR rules and regulations relevant to injection well activities can be found at the following websites:
