I get a warning about memory running low, even though my computer has plenty of free memory.

RSIG runs in your browser using the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). For security reasons, most operating systems limit the amount of memory JVM can use to 64MB or less by default. To override the default, you should set the runtime Java parameters -Xmx256m -Xms64m and restart your browser. These settings will allow JVM (and hence RSIG) to initially reserve 64MB of memory, with a limit of 256MB. 

When I retrieve data, it says it will take about a minute, but sometimes it takes longer.

RSIG uses remote data servers. RSIG estimates how long it will take, based on the number and types of variables being requested, the coverage area, and the number of days.  Network congestion and remote server load may impact the speed of the data retrieval. 

 

RSIG's Availability

One of RSIG's key innovations is its data delivery using conventional Internet and Web network connections. However, additional data traffic during peak network usage may degrade the overall system responsiveness or a remote host's system may be unavailable or unresponsive. The RSIG applet will display messages signaling data unavailability in such cases.
