International Cooperation

Where EPA Works Around the World

EPA carries out bilateral cooperative programs with many other countries around the world. These programs allow other countries -- especially developing countries and countries with economies in transition -- to benefit from U.S. experience in developing appropriate and effective environmental programs. Strong bilateral relationships are critical to obtaining other countries' support for EPA's global environmental priorities.

Learn about EPA's International Work in:

Antarctica

As required by the Antarctic Science, Tourism, and Conservation Act of 1996, EPA has issued regulations that provide for the environmental impact assessment of nongovernmental activities (including tourism) in Antarctica, and that coordinate the information review of environmental impact assessments received from other Parties.  These activities are called for by the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty of 1959.

Asia/Pacific

EPA works with nations in the Asia-Pacific region to protect the global environment and public health.  Our work focuses on large and developing economies and population centers, such as Vietnam. We also collaborate on initiatives in Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan, and partner with the Asian Development Bank.

Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin America and Caribbean program provides environmental tools and information to build the capacity of  governments and civil society organizations to reduce environmental degradation and its impacts on public health.

Eurasia

EPA has been collaborating with Russia, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Ukraine for over 20 years and continues to work with their governments and non-governmental organizations on environment, science and technology issues.

Europe

The United States and Europe enjoy long-standing economic and political relationships, address environmental impacts of joint concern, and face similar opportunities and challenges. By working together to achieve common goals, the U.S. and Europe can enhance our respective environmental protection efforts while creating a cleaner environment on both continents and around the world.

Middle East

US EPA’s environmental cooperation in the Middle East focuses on capacity building in environmental governance, water pollution and water security, clean fuels and vehicles, public participation, and pollution prevention.

North America

The three nations of North America are engaged in numerous partnerships to protect our common environment. EPA implements environmental agreements and cooperative frameworks both bilaterally and trilaterally with our continental partners. Together, our mission is to enhance the quality of life for all citizens and to protect ecosystems in North America.

Sub-Saharan Africa

EPA’s environmental program in Sub-Saharan Africa is focused on addressing Sub-Saharan Africa’s growing urban and industrial pollution issues, such as air quality, water quality, electronics waste and indoor air from cookstoves.
