Learn about SmartWay Tractors and Trailers

EPA-designated SmartWay Tractors and Trailers are long-haul freight vehicles that significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions of air pollutants. These tractors and trailers have been tested and validated to ensure top performance.

When used in combination, these tractors and trailers can achieve fuel savings of about 15 percent to 20 percent over standard models.

Information for Fleet Managers

As a freight carrier, when you find the SmartWay designation mark affixed on the inside of a tractor cab or trailer, you’ll know that you’re getting the cleanest, most fuel-efficient equipment commercially available. Companies typically see a return on investment within one to three years.

Only manufacturers with models that meet EPA's standards can call their tractors or trailers "SmartWay."

When you purchase or lease EPA-designated SmartWay Tractors or Trailers, you may be eligible to use the SmartWay logo on the exterior of your equipment.

Using the SmartWay logo on equipment allows you to:

  • Be recognized as an environmental leader.
  • Attract potential new customers.
  • Demonstrate to customers, clients, and investors that you are taking responsibility for the emissions associated with moving goods.

Information for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)

As a manufacturer, if you have questions regarding whether or not your tractors or trailers are eligible for SmartWay designation, contact Tech_Center@epa.gov with your company's name and tractor(s) and/or trailer(s) details.

To become an authorized manufacturer licensed to use the SmartWay designated logo, sign, complete and submit the SmartWay License Agreement to smartway_transport@epa.gov.  The license agreement authorizes manufacturers that manufacture, sell and/or lease tractors or trailers that meet the SmartWay technical specifications to promote and advertise these vehicles and trailers as “SmartWay Designated”.  The agreement also includes graphics standards and logo use guidelines.  The license agreement is a legal document so the signatory must be an authorized company official.
