Coal mine methane (CMM) emissions are globally distributed among the world's key coal-producing countries. Methane is a well-mixed gas in the atmosphere and emissions reductions anywhere in the world are important to reducing the total global burden of CMM emissions.
For many years, the Coalbed Methane Outreach Program (CMOP) has been actively engaged in helping to promote CMM recovery and utilization in many key coal-producing countries, including China, Colombia, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Poland, the Russian Federation, Turkey, and Ukraine. Today, CMOP conducts its international activities under the auspices of the Global Methane Initiative (GMI) Exit. International Coal Mine Methane Projects List(1 pg, 64 K) — Contains information on over two hundred coal mine methane recovery and utilization projects operating, in development, or planned around the world in both Global Methane Initiative partner and non-partner countries.
CMOP also works in close collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and with the International Energy Agency (IEA) Exit on CMM issues.
