EPA's Office of Research and Development (ORD) hosts a monthly public webinar series to share EPA resources and information that are useful, practical/applied and available to meet state research needs.
Webinars typically held the third Wednesday of every month from 3:00-4:00 PM (ET).
Attendees have the option of receiving a certificate of attendance for each webinar attended. Note that acceptance of certificates is contingent on state and/or organization requirements—EPA cannot guarantee acceptance.

Rapid Benefit Indicators (RBI) (May 17, 2017)
This webinar presented on the Rapid Benefit Indicators (RBI) approach, developed by EPA’s ORD, which is an easy-to-use process for assessing restoration sites using non-monetary benefit indicators. The RBI approach uses readily-available data to estimate and quantify benefits to people around an ecological restoration site using indicators of nature’s value to people (ecosystem service benefit indicators).

This webinar highlighted EPA’s Environmental Sampling and Analytical Methods (ESAM), a website tool that supports the entire environmental characterization process from collection of samples all the way to their analyses. ESAM’s tools helps local, state and federal emergency response personnel and laboratories more efficiently respond to incidents, enabling smooth transitions of samples and data from the field to the laboratory to public health decision makers.

Contaminated Sites and Technical Support Centers (December 17, 2018)
This webinar presented an overview of ORD's contaminated sites research and its Technical Support Centers (TSCs) which provide technical assistance to EPA regional and program offices for contaminated site cleanup. There are five TSCs: Engineering, Groundwater, Site Characterization and Monitoring, Health Risk, and Ecological Risk Assessment.
Remediation to Restoration to Revitalization (R2R2R) (November 14, 2018)
This webinar showcased work accomplished on Remediation to Restoration to Revitalization (R2R2R) which is a framework for translating ecological consequences from remediation and restoration projects into environmental and socioeconomic benefits such as swimmable water, enhanced recreational amenities, and green development. This webinar presented the R2R2R framework and how it can improve both ecological and social outcomes from remediation and restoration, focusing on its application in large-scale, aquatic sites.
Regional Urban Background Study (January 17, 2018)
This webinar showcased research on EPA's Regional Urban Background Study which provides methods on how to identify sources of soil contaminants in urban settings. This webinar also presented the methodology developed for collecting a city-wide or urban area background data set, general results of southeastern cities data collected to date, and a case study that used this sampling method.

Prioritizing Contaminants for Monitoring and Management (October 26, 2016)
This webinar provided an overview of collaborative research efforts to develop methods and tools that integrate chemical monitoring with pathway-based bioactivity measurements. These efforts will help provide screening-level assessments useful for identifying and prioritizing which emerging contaminants may warrant additional monitoring or management actions and potential hazards that may be associated with exposure.

CompTox Chemicals Dashboard (September 11, 2019)
CompTox Chemicals Dashboard is a “first-stop-shop” for chemistry, toxicity and exposure information for over 875,000 chemicals. Data are added on an ongoing basis and new releases of the dashboard occur a minimum of twice per year releasing new data and ongoing enhancements to functionality. This webinar focused on March and August 2019 updates to the dashboard and highlighted case studies of how it's been used. CompTox had 875,000 chemicals at the time of this webinar.

Ecotoxicology Knowledgebase (ECOTOX) (July 19, 2017)
This webinar highlighted the ECOTOXicology knowledgebase (ECOTOX), which is a comprehensive, publicly available knowledgebase providing chemical environmental toxicity data on aquatic life, terrestrial plants and wildlife. ECOTOX is an expert system used by federal, state and other risk assessors and researchers to identify and predict chemical toxicity effects on aquatic and terrestrial species.

Cyanobacteria Assessment Network (CyAN) Mobile App (July 24, 2019)
This webinar showcased the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network Mobile Application (CyAN app), an EPA tool that aims to help local and state water quality managers make faster and better-informed management decisions related to cyanobacterial blooms. This app provides an easy to use, customizable interface for accessing algal bloom satellite data for over 2,000 of the largest lakes and reservoirs in the United States. The first presentation of this webinar covered a general overview of CyAN app, followed by a step-by-step demonstration on how to use the app.

Nutrient Management in Coastal Communities (May 22, 2019)
This webinar focused on research related to nutrient management in coastal communities. This webinar presented on the promising results from the Advanced Septic System Nitrogen Sensor Challenge, as well as the broader nutrients research efforts focused on Cape Code and how they might be applicable to other communities with similar challenges.

Nutrient Visioneering (July 18, 2018)
This webinar highlighted the issue of nutrient pollution, the outcomes of the Nutrient Visioneering meeting, and the output from national experts. To address nutrient pollution, the US EPA organized an innovative public-private coalition to address the issue of excess nitrogen and phosphorous levels in water, for which the impacts to the economy are estimated to be in the billions annually.

Cost-Effective Treatment Technologies for Removing CECs (March 20, 2019)
This webinar featured current research on treatment technologies for three contaminants of emerging concern (CECs)—PFAS, cyanotoxins, and perchlorate—with an emphasis on determining cost-effective solutions for small systems. Specifically, how contaminant properties influence treatment effectiveness, operational complexity, cost, and residual stream handling was discussed. Also, novel technologies were discussed using anaerobic biofiltration of perchlorate and nitrate as an example, and a demonstration on the impact of system size to capital and operating costs was shown.

Cost-Effective Treatment Technologies for Small Drinking Water Systems (March 28, 2018)This webinar featured a developed and patented biological water treatment technology that removes ammonia. While ammonia itself is not a regulated contaminant, it interferes with some water treatment processes, such as arsenic removal. This cost-effective treatment technology provides a solution option for small drinking water systems in areas with high groundwater ammonia levels.
Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST) (February 21, 2018)
This webinar provided an overview of Watershed Management Optimization Support Tool (WMOST), which is a publicly available tool that can be used by state and local managers to screen a wide-range of options for cost-effective management of water resources. It supports a broader integrated watershed management (IWM) approach by allowing the user to simultaneously consider stormwater, drinking water, wastewater and land conservation management practices.
Village Blue (September 20, 2017)
This webinar showcased the Village Blue project that provides real-time water quality monitoring data to the Baltimore community and increase public awareness about local water quality in Baltimore Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay. Village Blue is designed to build upon EPA’s Village Green project which provides real-time air quality information to communities in six locations across the country.

EPA's Regional Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (RESES) Research Program (March 18, 2020)
This webinar provided an overview of EPA's Regional Sustainability and Environmental Sciences Research Program and highlighted two collaborative projects with states. The first project is working with the state of Ohio to explore the use of Landsat thermal imaging to detect landfills with elevated subsurface temperature. In the second project, EPA is working with Lousiana and local stakeholders in Ouachita Parish to use a Structured Decision Making approach to assess community sustainability goals and how best to prepare for future extreme events.
Training Webinars
SPECIATE is EPA's repository of organic gas and particulate matter (PM) chemical speciation profiles of air pollution sources. This training provided an overview of EPA’s SPECIATE database and how it is developed and used, summarized the updates made to SPECIATE in the recent versions, and showed how one could use a speciation profile to compute species emissions.

Freshwater Explorer (November 19, 2020)
EPA’s Freshwater Explorer provides information on the status of water resources for networks of streams in the U.S. color-coded for measured freshness (e.g. low salt and mineral content). Users will be able to perform geographical searches and visualize background and measured data for water quality parameters. This combination of information is useful for states to work with communities and regulated entities to find the right balance of protection and use of fresh water.
